Privacy & Cookie Policy
How we handle your data when you use speedtest.doctor and its network tools, and how cookie consent works.
Last updated: June 18, 2026.
1. Who we are / data controller
speedtest.doctor (the "Service") provides free online tools to measure and diagnose internet connections. The data controller responsible for your personal data is ITS INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SERVIZI, registered with the Italian Companies Register (CCIAA) (company / VAT no. IT02877860417).
You can contact us about privacy at privacy@speedtest.doctor. We have appointed a Data Protection Officer (DPO), who can be reached at dpo@speedtest.doctor.
Terminological Clarification — “Speed Test”
For the avoidance of doubt, the designation “speed test”, as used on this website, is employed solely in a generic, descriptive, and non-proprietary sense to denote the act of measuring the performance of an Internet connection. The expression “speed test” is understood as a common linguistic indicator of a measurement of Internet-connection speed, and is used exclusively to describe the type of measurement that the user is evaluating through the Service. In that respect, the measurement units referenced in connection with such measurements (as commonly recognized under WIPO nomenclature and international agreements) are not to be construed as exclusive to any single subject or origin; rather, the relevant metric descriptions denote the act of measurement itself, as a descriptive mathematical measurement function whose purpose is to describe the thing being measured. Accordingly, “speed test” signifies the act of measuring the functional ratios of transmission speed between two Internet network services, a function which may be implemented within C libraries and operating-system kernels and, more generally, within computing systems as a generic computational function for the calculation of mathematical metrics. The responsiveness function, expressed in milliseconds as the time elapsed between one request and the next, necessarily entails a temporal interval (a delay); and, in ordinary mathematical usage, the shorter such delay, the more “rapid” the function is understood to be. “Speed”, in this sense, is defined by a lesser time required to traverse the same physical distance when assessed from two different points of evaluation. The measurement of the “speed test”, within this verbal exception, therefore means the measurement of the speed of the Internet connection.
2. What data we collect
(a) Data you provide
None is required to use the tools. The core tools work without an account. You only provide personal data if you choose to — for example by emailing us, or (in future) by creating an account or submitting a contact form. In those cases we process the details you send us (such as your email address and message).
(b) Data collected automatically
When you use the Service we process limited technical data, including:
- IP address — your public IP is part of how the network tools work (it is the thing being tested) and is also used for security and abuse prevention.
- Device & browser information — such as browser type, operating system, language and screen size (user-agent data).
- Approximate location — a coarse, IP-based estimate (e.g. country / region), not precise GPS location.
- Connection metrics — measurements you generate, such as download/upload speed, latency, jitter and packet loss.
- Usage data — which tools you use and basic, aggregated interaction data, to keep the Service working and improve it.
How the tools work (important)
Tools such as the speed test, "what is my IP", DNS tools and leak tests operate on your own connection data. To function, they process your IP address and connection information either locally in your browser or in transit to measurement endpoints — for example our self-hosted measurement API at api.speedtest.doctor for throughput, and public DNS / RDAP / WHOIS / IP-info APIs (e.g. 1.1.1.1, 8.8.8.8, and an IP-geolocation provider) for lookups. When you run such a tool, the relevant data is necessarily sent to those endpoints so the measurement can be performed. We do not control those third parties' own processing; see section 6.
4. Advertising & affiliate links
speedtest.doctor is a free, ad-funded service. By using our website you agree that advertising is displayed as part of the Service. We do not offer a paid ad-free tier on the public site at this time.
- We display ads through Google AdSense and may include affiliate links. Ad scripts load automatically to fund the free Service.
- Google and its partners may set cookies or use similar technologies to deliver, personalize (where applicable) and measure advertising. By using speedtest.doctor you acknowledge that advertising is part of the Service.
- Where a link is an affiliate link, we will say so. We may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.
Our privacy notice distinguishes required advertising from optional preferences you may decline on the cookie banner. For questions contact privacy@speedtest.doctor.
5. Legal bases for processing
Under the GDPR, we rely on the following legal bases:
- Legitimate interest / contract (Art. 6(1)(f) and (b)) — to operate the tools you request, display advertising that funds the free Service, keep the site secure, and understand aggregate usage.
- Consent (Art. 6(1)(a)) — for optional preferences only, where applicable. Required advertising is not switched off via the optional reject control.
- Legal obligation (Art. 6(1)(c)) — where we must process data to comply with the law.
- Contract (Art. 6(1)(b)) — if you create an account or buy a paid plan in future, to provide that service.
6. Third-party processors & data sharing
We do not sell your personal data. We share data only with service providers that help us run the Service, and only as needed. Indicative categories:
- Hosting / infrastructure — our hosting provider.
- Measurement endpoints — services contacted to perform tests, e.g. our self-hosted measurement API at api.speedtest.doctor for throughput and public DNS / RDAP / WHOIS / IP-info APIs (such as 1.1.1.1, 8.8.8.8 and an IP-geolocation provider).
- Analytics — Matomo (self-hosted at stats.itsos.it; cookieless).
- Advertising — Google AdSense (required for free access).
- Email / support — our email provider.
Where these parties act as processors on our behalf, they are bound by data processing agreements. Measurement endpoints and ad networks may act as independent controllers for their own purposes; see their privacy notices.
7. International data transfers
Some providers may process data outside your country, including outside the EU/EEA (for example in the United States). Where that happens, we rely on appropriate safeguards — such as the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses, adequacy decisions, or equivalent mechanisms. You can request more information about the safeguards in place using the contact details below.
8. Data retention
We keep personal data only as long as necessary for the purposes above:
- Live test data — processed to return your result; not stored on a server by default, or kept only as long as needed to display/compare it on your device.
- Server / security logs — retained for a limited period for security and abuse prevention (typically 30–90 days).
- Consent records — kept to evidence your choice for as long as required by law.
- Aggregated / anonymised statistics — may be kept longer as they no longer identify you.
9. Your rights
Subject to applicable law (including the GDPR for EU/EEA/UK users), you have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you, and request a copy;
- Rectify inaccurate or incomplete data;
- Erase your data ("right to be forgotten") in certain cases;
- Restrict or object to processing based on legitimate interest;
- Data portability;
- Withdraw consent at any time, including by reopening the cookie banner via "Manage cookie preferences";
- Lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority (Data Protection Authority) in your country — in Italy, the Garante per la protezione dei dati personali.
To exercise any right, email privacy@speedtest.doctor. We will respond within the time limits required by law.
10. Children
The Service is not directed at children and is not intended for use by children under the age of digital consent in their country (16 in Italy). We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, contact us and we will delete it.
11. Security
We use appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect personal data — including encryption in transit (HTTPS), access controls and data minimisation. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we work to protect your data and to limit what we collect in the first place.
12. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be signalled on this page and, where appropriate, through the Service. The date below shows when it was last revised.
